Why babies fight sleep at 2 months

Your newborn may be staying awake for slightly longer stretches now. As they become more alert, they’re less likely to simply nod off when tired, especially in a busy or loud environment. They’re now more easily distracted and overstimulated, which can interfere with sleep.

3 tips to prevent overstimulation

Babies who experience sensory overload can have a hard time calming down and falling asleep. Once they do fall asleep, they may sleep fitfully or wake up after a short period. Sleep expert Lauren Lappen recommends keeping an eye on the clock:

  1. Note the time your baby wakes in the morning and after naps.
  2. After an hour of awake time, look for signs your baby is sleepy. If they yawn, have difficulty focusing, frown, or otherwise seem drowsy, it’s time to put them down for a nap.
  3. If you don’t see signs of sleepiness, place your baby in their crib or bassinet after no more than 90 minutes.

Establishing a sleep routine

Now is a good time to start establishing a simple sleep routine for your baby. Your baby is just starting to notice consistent and predictable patterns. The predictability of a routine can comfort them and signal that it’s time to rest.

At this age, a sleep routine can be as simple as turning on a white noise machine or singing the same lullaby before putting your newborn down to sleep. Around 6 months of age, you’ll want to adopt a regular bedtime routine consisting of several simple steps, such as putting on pajamas, reading a book, and singing a soothing song.

Pay attention to where your baby falls asleep

If you often feed your baby to sleep, stop when you notice them dozing off and put them in their bassinet or crib before they’re fully asleep. Similarly, if you often rock your baby to sleep, put them to bed instead when they’re calm and drowsy but awake.

Keep in mind that your baby is in the very early stages of forming habits. If some days you’re successful and some you aren’t, that’s okay ❤️ You’ll have many months to work on creating a solid foundation for sleep.
