How to make blueberry muffins with your toddler

Child helping their father make muffins in the kitchen

Cracking eggs, scooping sugar, and stirring batter: Toddlers love being involved in the kitchen ❤️ And making a batch of muffins with you can help them develop fine motor control, focus, and early math skills like counting. Keep in mind that baking with a toddler is about process, not perfection. There may be some mishaps, but cleaning up is part of the experience.

Making Muffins is one of Lovevery’s most beloved books, and many parents have asked for a real recipe to go with it. Your child can help with many of the steps in this recipe.

My First Blueberry Muffins

Makes 1 dozen

You will need

  • 1 standard 12-cup muffin tin
  • Nonstick cooking spray or paper muffin liners
  • 2 medium bowls
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 small bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rubber spatula
  • Oven mitt
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 2¼ cups flour, divided
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) softened butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or yogurt

Directions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly coat muffin tin cups with cooking spray or line them with paper liners.

Step 2
Combine blueberries and ¼ cup flour in a medium bowl. Toss gently to coat blueberries and set aside.

Step 3
Flour mixture: In another medium bowl, whisk together remaining 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 4
Butter-sugar mixture: Add butter pieces, sugar, and lemon zest—if using—to a large bowl. Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon.

Step 5
Crack one egg into a small bowl and whisk. Add to butter-sugar mixture. Repeat with remaining egg. Stir until eggs are completely incorporated.

Step 6
Add flour mixture to butter-sugar mixture and stir. Pour in milk or yogurt and mix until only a few streaks of flour remain. Gently fold in blueberries with a rubber spatula until evenly distributed.

Step 7
Spoon batter into muffin tin cups. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a tester comes out clean, rotating the tin halfway through baking.

Step 8
Remove tin from oven and place on a rack to cool for 20 minutes. Transfer muffins from tin to rack and cool completely.

Note: Please monitor your child closely to prevent accidents such as burns or cuts, and avoid the ingestion of raw ingredients, like flour and eggs. Ensure all tools and ingredients are safe and appropriate for their age and always handle hot surfaces and equipment yourself.
